Australian War MemorialWe often look at the writing of people from a hundred years ago and wonder what they were saying. But do your parents or grandparents ever wonder what you are saying? Slang has always been a very important part of Australian culture. In this activity, you will read a letter written by a soldier from Gallipoli. There are so many slang words, that a translation sheet is provided in the activity set.
If you think you know what is being said, rewrite the letter at the bottom of the page. Then check with the translation sheet. Next, write a letter to your own grandparents or someone of their age using modern-day slang. Do you think they will understand you? Remember, your nanna may want you to translate this letter, so don't use words or language that would make you or her embarrassed! |
All of these ideas and resources come from the Australian War Memorial Education website.
